On April 29th, 2019 the Rural Water District #6, Okmulgee County issued a letter to their customers advising that they have 2 CARCINOGENS over the legal limit!!

These CARCINOGENS are Total Trihalomethanes and Haloacetic Acids.

What do WE need to know about these CARCINOGENS?

Total Trihalomethanes – The trihalomethanes are chloroform, bromodichloromethane, dibromochloromethane, and bromoform.  The health concerns from these contaminants are bladder cancer, skin cancer and harm to fetal growth and development!!!! Are you pregnant or know someone who is?

Haloacetic Acids –  are a group of disinfectant byproducts that are formed when disinfectants, such as chlorine or chloramine, are used to treat water.  This group of acids has the same health concerns for cancers and fetal harm.

The standard or MCL limit for Total Trihalomethanes os 0.080 mg/l and Haloacetic Acids is 0.060 mg/l.  This water district tested at 0.130 and 0.134 mg/L for Total Trihalomethanes and 0.090 and 0.087 Haloacetic Acids.  In the letter the water district downplays the seriousness of the problem.  They told their customers that they can continue to drink their tap water but if anyone had specific health concerns they should consult their doctors.  REALLY?!?!? WHAT?!?!?

The icing on the cake is that they expect to have the problem resolved within 1 YEAR!!!!!  I say to myself…these carcinogens are 50% above the standard or MCL but you should feel safe drinking it while we take up to a year to fix the problem!!!!

I spoke to someone at Rural Water District #6 and they told me that they buy their water from Okmulgee County and the problem has already been going on for 1 – 2 years.  They do not know why Okmulgee County say the water is safe to drink when clearly it’s not, but they distribute the letter the way Okmulgee County tells them to!!
